FOODIE FACTS: WHAT YOUR CRAVINGS REALLY MEAN

I’ve often been told that food cravings are the body’s way of letting one know it is in need of something. Recently, I’ve found myself having a serious need to indulge in PIZZA, which led me to research what exactly my craving meant. I uncovered a remarkable and helpful list of cravings in relation to what vitamins or minerals our bodies may be crying out for. It’s amazing how from ONE craving you can discover what it is your body REALLY NEEDS!

Here’s what your body’s really craving if you :

Are you craving junk food:  French fries, pizza, soda and other junk food cravings often mean your body is lacking calcium. Instead of indulging in some dollar menu fries, or a tasty thin crust Italian pizza overloaded with toppings ( all American being my personal favorite ), try steamed broccoli, a kale salad, some sardines, yogurt or a glass of milk. They may not sound too appealing in relation to a slice of pizza or some nice crisp French fries, but you will feel guilt free which is always a PLUS!

Are you craving carb: You might be dieting and trying to cut these out , amplifying carb cravings x 10, or your body may be in need on nitrogen. Nitrogen can be found in high protein foods such as fish, beans, meat or nuts. Have some salmon, a turkey burger or a handful of almonds to bust those urges. If you find yourself craving carbs because you have cut them out, try to substitute with a healthy carb such as sweet potato, brown rice or oats. By keeping a balanced diet from each food group, and monitoring your carb intake; you can DEFINATELY avoid the impending carb binging escapade.

Are you craving salt or salty foods : Salt cravings are a sign your body is in need of chloride. Chloride is especially important to the body in order to maintain healthy electrolyte levels and digestion. Chloride helps in maintaining proper kidney function and assists in keeping fluid flow through tissues and blood vessels efficient. Importantly, chloride is a necessary ingredient in the body’s creation of hydrochloric acid which is used to digest food in the stomach. FoodPyramid advises ditching the salty potato chips for foods such as lettuce, tomatoes, rye or seaweed based products. So the next time you get a salty food craving, grab a salmon salad, a veggie snack pack with celery & cherry tomatoes or a tasty tuna sandwich.

Are you craving sugar : Sugar indulgences are a signal that you may be in need of chromium, carbon phosphorous, sulfur, and tryptophan. Ditch the sweet treats, and fill up on fresh fruit, cheese and sweet potatoes when you have a sweet tooth. This craving may also be an indication you aren’t getting enough sleep and may need to re-evaluate your sleep schedule . According to Shape.com when your body is tired, sometimes you crave sweets as a means of an energy boost. However, the energy from sugary treats is short lived and often leaves you feeling low. If you’re craving sweets and feeling tired, try to combat that feeling with a 20 minute walk or a power nap.

Are you craving caffeine : Caffeine cravings can be a sign of dehydration or a lack of iron or salt. Not drinking enough water can cause you to be lethargic, which in turn will have you low on body salts, and reaching for a second cup of coffee.  According to Time.com , instead have a glass of coconut water, or water with a sprinkle of pink Himalayan salt, to boost your hydration and also replenish your body with the salts and electrolytes it is missing. If you find yourself lacking iron try nutritious meals like a turkey omelet with spinach , or a tuna salad with some beets.
